Council evicts tenant for 'no reason': 'They really want to kick me out' - 5th Mar 2018

Council evicts tenant for 'no reason': 'They really want to kick me out' A man with mental health problems is facing eviction by Wellington City Council using a law, which the Prime Minister has criticised as unfair to tenants.

As you may recall, Labour campaigned during the election on making changes to the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA). One of the suggested changes was around the 'no cause' termination of a tenancy i.e. a landlord not needing to give a reason to end a tenancy. This Radio NZ article profiles a Wellington City Council tenant who is being evicted allegedly with no cause.

The tenant, Mr Cheung, took his case to the Tenancy Tribunal, but it upheld the council's decision because under the law, City Housing did not have to give a reason to terminate a tenancy. This will likely chnage however under the Labour government and it is likely the landlord, in this case Wellington City Council, will need to give a reason or cause for the termination of the tenancy deemed acceptable by the Tenancy Tribunal. All we can suggest at Propertyscouts is watch this space. Changes to the RTA will happen this year and we just hope they are fair for both landlords and tenants.
